Calendars • People have been calculating dates and time for thousands of years • Ancient people used the movement of planets to calculate time.
Time • In ancient Rome they used the Julian calendar, which was based on the movement of the sun. • But there were problems… • The Julian calendar was off by 11 minutes. (1 day every 128 years) • In 1582, Pope Gregory introduced the Gregorian calendar. • 365 days per year; leap year every four years; irregular months • People were upset because it caused them to lose 12 days.
