PURITAN’S BELIEFS Rachel Beag
Origin • Some of the first settlers in America were Puritans from England known as “the Pilgrims” who arrived in 1620 and settled in Massachusetts • They were part of the Church of England, but they didn’t agree with the ways their church was run. Their own beliefs were more strictly based on the Bible.
Beliefs • The Puritans believed strongly that they were God’s chosen People • They thought of the Native Indians as sinners, and it was their duty to convert them to Christianity
Puritan church • In Puritans communities, going to church was not a matter of choice • In 1675, Puritans in Massachusetts began locking churches during the service to stop their congregations from leaving • Sermons could be long and demanding and the average length of each sermon is 2hrs or more • The estimated number of sermons the average Puritan listened to in his or her lifetime is 7,000
Puritan Community • Puritans distrusted anybody who did not follow their religion. So people whose beliefs were different from those of the Puritans were often not accepted into the community. • They were often persecuted, some were branded with hot irons and whipped as they were marched.
