  4. Annoyed • Mad • Irritated • Frustrated • Not fair • Revenge • Want to get back what you lost

  5. Countries after World War 1 • Western democracies wanted to preserve peace • Felt that if they gave into certain demands they could avoid another world war • Mussolini, Hitler, and the leaders of Japan viewed the desire for peace as a weakness

  6. Aggressors • Japan thought they should have equal empire to that of U.S • To achieve this they invaded and took control of Manchuria • Italy wanted to expand its imperial ambitions • To achieve this they invaded and took control of Ethiopia • Germany lead by Hitler, built up the military in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles

  7. European response • Western democracies do not respond to his actions • They adopt policy of appeasement • Appeasement- giving into the demands of an aggressor in order to keep peace • Many countries were devastated by war wanting nothing to do with it • Many governments adopt policy of pacifism- opposition to all war

  8. Conditions leading to war • Because of European weakness Japan, Germany, and Italy form Axis powers • Hitler took control of the Austrian government and gains control • European leaders persuaded Czechoslovakian leaders to give up Sudetenland in exchange for peace • Hitler agreed to end aggression

  9. Conditions before war • Hitler ignores agreement and announces a pact with the Soviet Union known as the Nazi-Soviet Pact • On September 1, 1939 Germany invades Poland, two days later Britain and France declare war and World War 2 has started
