Origins The Han Dynasty was from 206 BC till 220 AD and it was the second imperial dynasty of China, preceded by the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC) and succeeded by the Three Kingdoms (220-265 CE).
Emperors • The Han Dynasty had 26 emperors. They all were somehow related by cousins, sons, wifes, daughters, or fathers.
Achievements • They have been in power for 400 years, it is reasonable to expect that the Han dynasty left lasting legacies in China and to the world. • Economically, the Han dynasty regained its foothold despite a decline that occurred during the Qin dynasty, it overlapped over the early Han period.
Decline • They declined because of Government corruption, peasant rebellion, power being held by feudal lords rather than by the central government. • The Han effectively ended when warlord Dong Zhou used Emperor Xian as a puppet, but officially it did not end until warlord Cao Pi forced Emperor Xian to abdicate in 220 AD.
When the Qin dynasty collapsed, many groups fought for power. • Liu Bangs army won control • He became the emperor because of the Chinese belief in the mandate of Heaven. • He wanted to free people from the harsh government policies of the Qin
China was reunited under the rule of the Han dynasty, which is divided into two major periods: the Western or former Han and the Eastern or Later Han.
