  3. Leaders • Emperor Shi Huangdi was the leader of the Qin Dynasty from 259-210 B.C. • Liu Bang was the first leader of the western Han Dynasty from 206-195 B.C. • Liu Xiu was the first leader of the eastern Han Dynasty from 25-57 A.D.

  4. AchievementsThe Han rule was a time of great achievements. • Science- The Han Dynasty created the first ancient Chinese seismograph. When an earthquake struck, a lever inside caused a ball to drop from a dragon’s mouth into a toad’s mouth, indicating the direction from which the earthquake had come. • Medicine-Han doctors studied the human body and used acupuncture to heal people. • Art and Literature- Art and literature thrived, and inventors developed many useful devices.

  5. The Silk Road • The Silk Road was a long trade route that stretched across the heart of Asia. • This road connected Han China in the east with the Roman Empire in the west. • Goods that were part of the Han Dynasty were silk, spices, and gold. The main goods traded along the Silk Road were luxury goods-ones that were small, light, and expensive.

  6. Confucius’s ideas on family life and government • Since Confucianism was the government’s official philosophy during Wudi’s reign, Confucian teachings on family were honored. • They had taught that the father was the head of the family and that the father had absolute power. • The Han taught that the woman’s duty was to obey her husband, and children had to obey their father. • Since the Han rewarded strong family ties and respect for elders, some men gained government jobs for the respect they showed their parents.

  7. Inventions and Advances • The Han Dynasty invented one thing that we use everyday, which is paper. They made it by grinding plant fibers, such as mulberry bark and hemp, into paste. • They also made other innovations in science. These innovations included the sundial and the seismograph. • Han emperors were very interested in learning about the movements of the earth. • Another innovation of the Han Dynasty was acupuncture, which improved medicine. • Several Han inventions in science and medicine are still used today.

  8. Failing Moments of the Han Dynasty • The Han Dynasty collapsed under a combination of domestic and external pressures. • The Eastern Han emperors failed to put forward any groundbreaking land reforms after the failure of its dynasty. • Corruption and bribery contributed into lingering adverse consequences of land privatizations throughout the dynasty.

  9. Definitions • Innovations- a new idea, method, or device • Sundial- a device that uses the position of shadows cast by the sun to tell the time of day • Seismograph- a device that measures the strength of earthquakes • Acupuncture- the practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points to cure disease or relieve pain
