Good vs. Great It’s Not About You, It’s About Us. It’s the Sisterhood of the thing.
What distinguishes a good leader from a great leader? The difference is in the leader’s heart. Great leaders go beyond mere goal accomplishment and lead at a higher level by working for the greater good and inspiring others to do the same. They understand that leadership isn’t all about them, but about the people they serve.
The first aspect of a leader’s service is to see the future. Leadership is about taking people from one place to another. To do that, leadersmust see the future by creating and communicating a compelling vision that stirs people’s passion and shows them where they are headed.
Second, leaders must focus on engaging and developing people. This means selecting the right people for the right jobs and helping them live according to the vision. You want to do more than enlist their hands—you want to engage their heads and hearts as well.
Third, leaders reinvent continuously on the personal level, the systems and process level, and the structural level. Great leaders first continually educate and develop themselves so they can make more effective business decisions.
Then, they work to improve the organization’s systems and processes by identifying ways to enhance production and instilling the desire for improvement in employees. Furthermore, they continually assess whether the organizational structure truly serves the business.
Fourth, great leaders value both results and relationships. They recognize that results are very important, but that focus cannot exclude relationships with followers. To be effective, leaders must inspire and develop strong bonds with the people who work for them.
Fifth, genuine leaders must embody the values they espouse. If leaders say people are important, their actions had better support that statement.Embodying the values is all about walking your talk. The leader, above all, has to be a walking example of the vision.
