  1. Acid & Base Nomenclature Almost there!

  2. How to recognize a compound/formula as being an acid or base: • Acid:has H, hydrogen, at the beginning. - Can be H and one other element - Binary Acid - Can be H and a polyatomic ion - Ternary Acid • Base: contains OH, hydroxide. - Metal and the hydroxide ion

  3. Binary Acids • Hydro + second element (Change ending to –ic) + acid • HCl • HF • Your turn!

  4. Ternary Acids • If the polyatomic ion ends with –ate • No prefix and change –ate ending to –ic + acid. • HNO3

  5. Ternary Acids • If the polyatomic ion ends with –ite • No prefix and change –ite ending to –ous • HNO

  6. Acid Formulas • Treated like ionic compounds (more on this later!) • Get the charges • H = +1 • Then swap & drop!
