  2. Review • Did you have an opportunity to use the problem solving process since last class? Describe how you used it and how it worked. Microsoft, 2011

SMARTER Goals • Revisit the goals that you made two classes ago. • Evaluate your progress toward the goal. • Are there any action steps/ to-dos you can check off on your to-do list in Family Connection? • Have you achieved any of your short-term goals? • Do you need to modify any of your goals or add any new action steps to help you reach your goals? • What persistence strategies have you used in the last couple weeks?   4. Objective • Today’s objective is to: • Read the stories of real Minnesota students from diverse backgrounds who persisted in the face of challenges and reached their goal of attending college on the path to reaching their career goals.

  5. Jigsaw • Count off by 5 • Form groups with students with the same number • Your groups are assigned to the following stories: • Patricia – page 7 • Juventino – page 13 • Alan – page 19 • Eric – page 23 • Sue – page 27

  6. Jigsaw Part I • Read the story on your own and when everyone in your group has finished, discuss the following: • What are the challenges faced by the student? • What are the strategies used to overcome the challenge(s). • What are some other strategies that may have been used as well?

  7. Jigsaw Part II • Form new groups in which there is a member of each of the former groups • (5 students in each group, each one having read a different “Within My Reach” story.”) • Each student in the group should share: • A description of the student he/she read about • Challenges the student faced • Strategies that were used or could be used to overcome the challenges.

  8. Reflection • On paper complete the Persistence Self-Reflection. Microsoft, 2011
