What Is A Paragraph? • A series of sentences related to a single thought. • One complete unit of thought.
How Long is the Average Paragraph? A range of60 - 100 words. 3 - 7 Sentences: • 1 Topic sentence • 2-5 supporting sentences
A Typical Paragraph Contains 3 Basic Elements: • A Topic Sentence • Related/Supporting Sentences • Transitional Elements
What is the Topic Sentence? • A summary of the main idea of the paragraph. • Usually, the topic sentence comes first in the paragraph. • Avoid a too general or a too narrow topic sentence.

Checklist For Paragraphs • Does your paragraph begin with a clear, directed topic sentence? • Does your paragraph have adequate support and development? • Are your paragraphs too long/too short, or is the information focused? • Do you use transitions and repetition of keywords to achieve coherence?
