3. Goal: Create a Deeper Understanding of CCSS & PARRC among Postsecondary Faculty

4. Attaining Goal Through: • Creation of steering committee of K-12 teachers and teacher education faculty • Lead by Diane Wolf, ROE 17, and Barbara Meyer, ISU School of Teaching and Learning • Facilitation of workshop on August 14, 2013 • 150 supervising, cooperating, and instructing teachers and principals • Discussion on next steps for integrating CCSS into teacher preparation programs

Attaining Goal Through: • Redesigning all the elementary teacher education courses in the ISU College of Education to align with the New Illinois State Standards and PARCC assessments • Review of course syllabi by faculty in other colleges at ISU (Math/English) that teach secondary education students

7. Goal: Reducing Remediation Courses through P-12 Collaboration

8. Attaining Goal Through: • A shared definition of college and career readiness • Math • ELA - with a focus on writing • Efforts to educate faculty both within and outside teacher preparation programs

9. Math & ELA Summits • Two subcommittees plan each content specific summit (math/ELA) • ELA subcommittee narrowed the focus of ELA to simply focus on writing. • Summits were two fold • June • August

ELA August Summit Was Guided By Feedback • Participants enjoyed and benefited from open discussion across multiple grade levels. • Participants requested and received resources and website links related to ELA ILS. • Writing terminology and expectations at the collegiate level were shared to discuss college readiness. • Curriculum alignment efforts at various institutions was discussed.

13. ELA Writing ILS Curriculum Alignment Efforts at BBCHS District 307 Example: Students will analyze multiple sources from multiple genres to investigate a political or social issue. Students will create an original research question, conduct research, and interview to investigate a topic. Students will develop a written argument based on the integration of multiple diverse media formats that varies syntax for rhetorical effect. • Student choice and ELA ILS aligned writing opportunity

Our Findings from the Summits Reveal... • Including reading and incorporating critical reading strategies into writing instruction is essential. • Shifting classrooms to reading and writing workshops can be beneficial. • Independent reading across genres with increasing complexity increases writing performance. • Instructors can promote student efficacy in regard to writing by providing ‘safe’ environments through formative feedback.
