Roundtable Purpose(as described in the past) • Helps the U.S. implement national scale criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable forests • Provides a forum for stakeholders to suggest approaches to implement and interpret the C&I • Fosters shared learning among diverse stakeholders, across multiple scales, from international to national to state, tribal, and local • Encourages sharing of diverse types of knowledge and points of view • Promotes increased understanding and more informed decision-making about our nation’s forests
Self-chartered in 1999 • Participants have included representatives from: • Federal agencies (USFS, USGS, BLM, many others) • Tribal, state, and local governments • Industrial forest landowners & companies • Non-industrial forest landowners • Conservation and environmental groups • Regional and community-based organizations • Academics and other researchers Overarching Philosophy: Better Data leads to Better Dialogue, which leads to Better Decisions
OBJECTIVES FOR THIS DISCUSSION: • Develop a preliminary list of activities, projects, deliverables – what the Roundtable should focus on • Go beyond generalities, be prepared to describe how the activity, project, or deliverable • would be operationalized; • take advantage of the unique attributes the Roundtable; • make a valuable contribution to the goal of SFM. • Identify self-selected champions to further develop and refine ideas, and recruit participants Theme for Day: Form Follows Function
Examples of the Champion Approach and Form Following Function • Multiple Perspectives Project • Definition of Forests • Integration & Synthesis Group • C&I Refinement Workshops • Regional Workshops to “Broaden & Deepen” commitment to SFM & C&I • TWG & COWG RSF contribution to 2003 Report • Core Group
Proposed Process Steps after this meeting: • Self-determined champion(s) further develop ideas in writing [June 1?]: • Concise description of activity, project, deliverable; • Describe value proposition and why the Roundtable?; • Identify people and organizations willing to lead, participate, and/or needed to succeed • Create a drafting group to bring ideas together into a cohesive draft work plan [June 15?] – any volunteers? • Share draft work plan with RSF contact list; ask for feedback, reactions, another chance to champion [July 1?] • RSF Core Group meets to discuss draft work plan and the feedback received from RSF participants [July] • Executive Leadership Team (Co-Chairs) finalize Roundtable Work Plan based on feedback from RSF participants and outcome of Core Group meeting by [Sept]
