AQF - Australian Qualifications Framework “Flexibility” and “Fairness” are both our strengths and our weaknesses. We enable students to demonstrate competence in low level qualifications without building the literacy and numeracy skills required for success in higher level qualifications. There are significant number of students who can not succeed at Cert III and above because of LLN difficulty.
VET - Vocational Education and Training • Competency and outcomes based • Underpinning skills and knowledge • Focus on employment outcomes • Assessment must be ‘flexible’ and ‘fair’ -> catch 22
Strategies • Acknowledge dialect as different not deficient • Provide two-way learning environment • Provide specialised linguistic support • Provide contextualised literacy development through low level certificates to enable pathway progression
