Biography • Born April 27, 1920 to Alfred Cleo Mann and Nina Griffin Mann. • Mann graduated from Greenville High School in 1937. • Four years later (1941) he graduated from the Citadel. • Served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel at his leave. • After his military service, Mann entered USC and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1947 with his Juris Doctor Degree

  3. Biography • Mann was elected to the South Carolina State House of Representatives in 1948, serving two terms. • In 1953, Governor James F. Byrnes appointed him to fill an unexpired term as the circuit solicitor for the 13th Judicial Circuit of South Carolina. He was reelected two more times consecutively. • In 1968, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 4th Congressional District.

Biography • During the impeachment proceedings against President Nixon, Mann was appointed to the House Judiciary Committee, where he gained national recognition for his leadership. • Mann also later served here as chairman of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice. • As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Mann was selected to participate in the Chief Justice Earl Warren Conference and the Bicentennial Conference.

Biography • Mann played an instrumental part as chairman of the Informal House Textile Committee from 1975-1978, in its conversion to an official and permanent House Textile Caucus. • Mann also served on the House Select Committee’s on Crime and Narcotics Abuse, and the House District of Columbia Committee. • After his retirement in 1979 from Congress, Mann began practicing law in Greenville, South Carolina.

Biography • Mann is currently a member of the Earl Street Baptist Church where he is a member of the choir. • He is married to the former Virginia Thomason Brunson. • They have 3 sons and 1 daughter: James, David, William and Virginia Mann Carmada. • They also have 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. • Mann is the second son of former Mayor Alfred Cleo Mann and Nina Griffin Mann.

  8. Positions and Accomplishments • Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children • Defender Corporation of Greenville County Inc. • Carolina Youth Symphony • Presbyterian College • Board of Kivanis Elks • American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was State Commander.

  9. Accomplishments • Some of the Awards Mann has received: • The Order of the Palmetto • The American Legion Award for 50 years of faithful and continuous service • The Complete Lawyer Award by U.S.C.

  10. Interview Matt: What does the Circuit Solicitor do for the Judicial Circuit? Mann: For example I had 13 murder cases in 2 weeks and I had 2 assistants and I took over for Bob Ashmore. He left about 200 unfinished cases for me, so I had to clean them up because he was lazy. It dealt with felony, robbery, and murder cases.

  11. Interview Matt: What was it like being selected for the annual Chief Justice Earl Warren Conference and the Bicentennial Conference on the U.S. Constitution. Which of the two do you hold to the highest regard? Mann: Well…I wasn’t impressed. Matt: What was it like Receiving the Order of the Palmetto and the American Legion Award? Mann: I was flattered and appreciative even though I had my share of awards.

  12. Interview Matt: Of all your accomplishments and services which has been the most satisfying achievement? Mann: The circuit solicitor because I cleaned up a lot of cases.
