Career College is…. • A 16 week post-secondary certificate program for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. This entry level program provides a foundation for transitioning into career or other course of study. The students further develop reading, math and computer skills along with participation in a hands-on practicum experience within their program of study.
How it all began…… • Introductory letter from Alamance Community College to surrounding school systems • Topics of discussion • Transition for students beyond high school • OCS • Getting to know EC departments in schools • Parent Outreach/Fairs
Research begins….. • Coordinator of Special Needs from ACC started to look at what other programs were available for OCS students. - on campus - across the state

Enrollment • First semester- Spring 2009 – 5 total students • all OCS Graduates from Public School System • Second semester – Fall 2009 – 11 total • 6 from Public School System • 4 from CED • 1 from Curriculum • Third Semester- Spring 2010 – 12 total • 3 from Public School System • 6 from Adult Basic Education (ABE) • 2 from Curriculum • 1 from Private School
Enrollment • Fourth Semester- Fall 2010 – 9 total - 5 from Public School Systems - 4 from Adult Basic Education (ABE) • Fifth Semester – Spring 2011 - not running due to low enrollment numbers
Graduation Eligibility • Attend class as scheduled and be on time for class (must attend 80% of the class) • Maintain a C average or better in order to be eligible for graduation • Must complete all components of Career College (HRD, Basic Skills, & Program Areas)

Application Process • Referral - HS OCS teacher - Transition Coordinators - OE Enterprises - Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VR) • Application Packet - Application - Official High School Transcript - Reference forms (3) - Take the TABE (reading and math) - Sign Expectations and Code of Conduct Statement - Statement of Interest
Application Process Continued • Must be submitted by deadline • TB Test – for Health & Public Services Assistant • Cost: $178 - received scholarships from local organizations - if a VR client, talk with your VR counselor • Textbooks: purchased in the bookstore
Application Review Process… • Committee is made up of • 2 VR Counselors • 3 ACC Basic Skills Staff • 1 Coordinator of Special Needs • 1 School System Representative Students were notified of acceptance or denial by phone and letter by the Coordinator of Special Needs.

After Graduation • 37 graduates (from Spring 2009 – Fall 2010) • 11 graduates are employed (from Spring 2009 – Spring 2010) - 4: Health Care Aides or Personal Care Assistants - 1: Automotive Assistant - 6: Other (Childcare, Fast Food, Grocery)
After Graduation • 6 Continuing at ACC • 3 in Adult Basic Education • 1 in Compensatory Education • 2 in Curriculum (1 Developmental Courses, 1 Green Energy Certificate) • 3 in Dual Areas (employment & school)
