What is manipulation? • Influencing people, their opinions, attitudes or decisions • It happens against one´s will • There are different kinds (intimidation, proving advantages etc.) • Aiming at a special interest • Pictures are more effective and influencing
Manipulating mechanisms • Media ( TV, Internet, Radio, press, books etc.) is the most important mechanism • A big part of the populace is adressed • main mechanism for mass manipulation • Propaganda and education are also common examples for manipulation mechanisms
How does manipulation work? • Exaggeration of advantages • Playing disadvantages down, concealing • Ignore/ censor other opinions • Make false assertion • Accept misunderstandings • Become private and confidential • Camouflage references • Appeal emotions (prejudices) • Depicting facts unilaterally • Disparage the opposition side
Would you notice? An example. • Link for positive and negative words: http://www.rhetorik.ch/Propaganda/Propaganda.html (german)
Advertising • -they show happy people and luck to make the consumer connect these happiness with their products • -they often try to glamorize drugs like alcohol (Batida de Coco) • -they never show the reality, only an image • there are wrong values of beauty and happiness
Control the news and you control the people! • Biggest part of the world receives daily information on what is happening in the world from news • Hard to verify • most of the ‘news’ is not a result of good investigative journalism • Most of the people believe what is told in the news • Higher positions (government, companies, military) cover up bad news
Manipulation in the supermarket - - cheaper offers are always at the bottom, and the expensive ones on eye level - there are many offers in the advertising brochure which are not cheaper than usually - there are only a few things shown in the supermarket, the others are in the store room Customer buys goods ahead, although he doesn´t need it at that time
Thanks for your attention!! (clap hands)
