The Curriculum Renewal Cocktail- Stirred not Shaken? Chris Evans CAFAD November 2011
Overview • Some general thoughts about what is required for curriculum renewal • A case study that is on my current “to do” list
Curriculum Cocktail- Key Ingredients • Something new • Curricular Coherence: DLEs analysis. • Quality of content • Academic credibility. • Quality of student experience/ Serve students’ needs. • Serve society’s needs. • Alignment with institutional goals. • Evolution or Revolution? • Resources/Costing: A new funding allocation model. • Buy-In: top-down vs grassroots?
Case Study: The Digital Media Zone in Undergrad Curriculum • Universities want/need to contribute to economic and cultural prosperity • Students want • Career-focused education • To have access to co-curricular activities • To do be creative in their curriculum • To express their own innovative ideas • To build their own things
Ryerson’s Response • Faculty • INNOVATION • Undergraduate students • Graduate students Research (Curiosity-driven and applied) Entrepreneurial thinking
The Digital Media Zone (DMZ) The DMZ is designed to help take any digitally-inspired concept and make it real - whether the idea is part of a project or event, or a marketable product or service, or a business plan.
The Zone Model AppliedResearch Contracts Youth-Driven Innovation Academic and Professional Programs New Ventures and Strategic Partnerships
Connecting the DMZ and Undergraduate Curriculum • Specialization Semester in Digital Entrepreneurship and Innovation • A re-imagining of co-op/approach to experiential learning • Open to undergraduates from any program who meet admission requirements • External to programs • Separate credential- “Zone Semester” on transcript
The Project • Balancing the free form of DMZ activity with the need for academic evaluation: • Unstructured or project managed? If unstructured, what is evaluated? • A business model/plan upon admission + a “reflection piece” at the end? • Development of a business model? Building an effective team? • Something else? • Who does the evaluation?
