Data Management Update 2009 Data Management Conference Tucson
NRPC Policy in October, 2006: • NRPC will integrate natural resource data applications • eliminate redundant data storage; streamline functions • Create a central web portal, single sign-on system • Develop a common user interface for all natural resource applications • Transition to service-oriented architecture (SOA), starting with NPSpecies, NatureBib, and the NPS Data Store. IRMA is the project implementing this policy.

What’s in it for networks? • Integrated system for information dissemination • Access to data and tools • Security, longevity • View your data in context with other data
Summary • IRMA will have long-lasting effects on how NPS manages natural resource data • Other divisions and programs will be migrating their systems to IRMA-compatible structures as time and resources allow (e.g., RPRS, water, climate) • Networks and other users will be able to access IRMA services directly. • We are just at the point where progress and benefits will be visible.
Application will eventually be incorporated into NRInfo Portal
SharePoint - What is it? • Microsoft Windows Server program that’s part of MS Office • Web-based collaboration tool • easy for users to post content (unlike websites) • share documents; track versions; create surveys, discussion forums, wikis, calendars • fine-grained permissions for read, write, edit, delete, design • integrated with Active Directory • Extranet?
