Quiz 3 issues • Categories used for American cultures: helpful but not accurate (item 9) • You need to know your own culture to understand others (item 16) • Item 22 isn’t worded the best: It means “if you behave that way.” Even if you believe in the opposite manner, of course, it’s still your orientation to knowledge. • We’ll cover issues associated with D-I-E later in the hour. (items 28 and 32)

Improving intercultural competence: BASIC • Turn to page 46 in your packet • Rate yourself on in the following manner: • Displays of respect (1=extremely formal; 10= extremely informal • Orientation to knowledge (1=culture is absolutely universal; 10=culture is highly personal • Empathy (1=high tendency to express emotions and concern for understanding based on your own culture; 10=high tendency to try to adapt to the other person’s comfort level with emotional expression, and high desire for understanding the other
Improving intercultural competence: BASIC • Interaction management (1=high tendency to treat all communication interactions and turn taking the same way; 10=high sensitivity to other person’s cultural way of interacting and turn taking • Task role behavior (1=very focused in personal needs and goals; 10=very focused on group needs and goals) • Relational role behavior (1=inattentive to behaving in ways that maintain interpersonal relationships; 10=highly engaged in behaviors to maintain them • Tolerance for ambiguity (1=strong desire for clarity of communication and certainty; 10=high tendency to accept uncertainty
