Nike History and Business Presented by Sasha and Lexi
Brief History • “If you have a body, you are an athlete.” “As long as there are athletes, there will be Nike” • “Blue Ribbon Sports” founded by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman in 1964 • Named “Nike” in 1972 • Now is world’s biggest sports/fitness company. Bowerman Knight
Goods/Subsidiary • In apparel industry • Mainly athletic shoes and athletic clothing • Also watches, sports’ equipment and other small items • Has one subsidiary: “The Company”-but is not a major subsidiary at all
Helping the Society • December 2001, Nike made a dream come true for the kids of Simnasho, Oregon by building them a $36,000 playground. • October 2001, Nike organizes for Chamique Holdscalw (Washington Mystique’s player) to give Rocky Boy High School students a talk about character, health, and the importance of education.
Competitors • Nike is the biggest company in it’s industry. • “And 1”, “Adidas”, and “Reebok” are it’s competitors • “And 1” is not nearly as successful as Nike • “Adidas” is strong, but is not its own company. • “Reebok” is the closest company of comparison to Nike.
Recommendation • In the long run has gone up in the stock market • Has had a steady history • People will always need its service • It is the biggest in its industry and it seems like it will be for a long time • Is not so big that it is bound to crash any moment
5 yr. Nike Comparison to Reebok • Reebok lower revenues, net incomes, and expenses. The difference is several hundreds of millions of dollars. • Nike had greater earnings per share. • Nike remains in the lead for Profit Margin • Reebok – declining revenues, just barely stabilized • Nike – 3 times as large as Reebok
Why? • It has always gone up in the market- good for long-term investors • It also has small short boosts like during the Olympics- good for short-term investors • Not very risky because sports apparel/equipment will always be essential
