  2. Goal Residents will become better prepared for their leadership positions by learning what effective leadership requires and why it is an essential skill in their residency and throughout their careers.

Resident as Team Leader At the end of the session, the learner will be able to: • Define what effective leadership is and why it is important. • Describe effective characteristics of a resident as team leader. • Identify the fundamentals of management. • Describe the role of supervision in leadership.

  4. Brainstorming Exercises • What are some characteristics of an effective resident leader? • What makes a good team on your inpatient services? • What are you greatest challenges as team leaders?

  5. Fundamentals of Leadership • Set Goals • Personal goals & practical behavior • Establish team goals • Catch People Doing Something Right • Immediately praise • Don’t wait for perfect behavior • Give Negative Feedback Immediately • Don’t wait until end of rotation • Single criticism better received them several at once One-Minute Manager (Blanchard, Johnson, 1983: Brown, 1987)
