What is multimedia? “Means of communication through more than one medium” A medium is a type of communication (1 way or 2 way) between a learner and the source e.g. Flash message, or Real streaming video Multimedia allows for the presentation of information in numerous ways, combing text, audio, visual, graphic, animation and video Why Multi media Visual stimuli is superior to verbal stimuli in children's retention and recall
Medium • Communication uses few human sensory modalities • sight, hearing and touch • Within modalities there are channels or symbolic modes. • For example, written text in a specific language, pictures and video are symbolic modes within the visual sensory modality • 'Desktop Multimedia' is really multi-modal communication • in particular with sound or video in addition to the usual text and still images
Modes • Text: eg TXT, DOC, RTF, PDF, HTML etc • Images:Still graphics & images diagrams, charts, GIF, BMP, TIFF & JPEG • Animations:Animation &Moving images e.g. animated GIF, AVI, MPEG • Sound: Spoken word or sound(digital audio) eg WAV files • Music : CD-Audio, MP3, MIDI, MID files

Characteristics • Interactivity • Entertaining • Fast pace • Minimal text (words) • Easy to Understand & quicker than more conventional methods • Strong impact on ‘Sensory Organs’ which has direct link with ‘retention and recall powers”
Implications • What EXPERIENCE do students have with this medium? • What SKILLS do they have? • Is the medium SUITABLE for their needs and abilities?
Results • Some children resist schools, study even computers! Multimedia helps to overcome this problem. • Multimedia is more sort of theory along with practicalbecause of it’s interactive nature • Multimedia resources can motivate students to explore materials in more depth and breadth
