  1. Nomination of Our City (Izmir) as European Capital of Culture

  2. WHY IZMIR?

  3. Izmir has a unique geographical feature which connects Asia with Europe, the Black Sea with the Mediterranean and it is located in the farthest west of the East and the farthest east of the West.

  4. Population: 3.965.232 (2011)Urbanization rate: % 91.13 Area: 12.003 km2 

  5. Izmiris a city of fairs and congresses. It has a 79 year of fair experience with having organized Turkey’s first international trade fair,” İzmir International Fair’’.

  6. Izmiris a city of commerce, and is on the second place in the country for export / import coverage ratio. Izmiris a city of industry; there are 19 organized industrial zones and 2 free trade zones in İzmir.

  7. Izmir Harbour • Harbour of Izmir has been very important throughout history.

  8. Izmiris a coastal town; and an important point for the transportation of Europe’s products to Asia and Asia’s products to Europe.

  9. Izmir is a well-educated city with a continuously improving quality of life and it is also home to city of universities.

  10. Izmiris a city of tourism. It has a rich tourism potential both in the city center and its surroundings and also has an average of 300 sunny days per year.

  11. Izmir is a dynamic and continuously changing city with its young population.

  12. Our Cuisine • İzmir's cuisine has largely been affected by its multicultural history, hence the large variety of food originating from the Aegean, Mediterranean and Anatolian regions. Another factor is the large area of land surrounding the region which grows a rich selection of vegetables.

  13. Izmiris a city of history and archeology. It is surrounded by thousands of historical and archeological richness.

  14. Izmiris a city of culture and arts. With its traditions of thousands of years, İzmir has become a center for different cultures and branches of art; it has hosted many international cultural activities and has become a center where aesthetics and creativity meet. These are some of the most important cultural values of Izmir:

  15. SMYRNASmyrna was an ancient city located at a central and strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia in 11th century BC .The core of the late Hellenistic and early Roman Smyrna forms today the large area of İzmir Agora Open Air Museum.
