Political Thought • Two English philosophers, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, developed political theories in response to the English revolutions of the seventeenth century. • Their theories were very different.
ThomasHobbes wrote a political work called Leviathan. He believed that humans were guided by a ruthless struggle for self-preservation Hobbes
Hobbes • Believed that people made a social contract and agreed to form a state to save themselves form one another • People in the state agreed to be governed by an absolute ruler who possessed ultimate power. • Hobbes believed this power was necessary to preserve order in society
John Locke wrote a political work call Two Treatises of Government He did not believe in the absolute rule of one person Locke
Locke • Locke believed humans had certain natural rights • Right to life, liberty, and property
Locke • He believed that people agreed to establish a government to ensure the protection of these rights • The government would agree to protect these rights and the people would agree to act reasonably toward government
Locke • According to Locke, if government broke this contract, then the people could form a new government
