  2. Proposal and discussion note • Functional requirements: what should the portal be able to do “One of our fisheries people came to me today. They want to set up a system to provide information to fisheries authorities. For instance their system would ask "what is the depth at this position?" "what are the marine sediments here?" "what fisheries zone am I in?" "what is the water temperature at a certain depth?" "where does a fishing port start and end?“… They would send an XML message and receive back the answer through web services. They said that they would define the format (longitude, latitude, time etc) so there might need to be some translation. I understand that it is point data that they are talking about….” =>The EMODnet portal should be able to do that…. EMODnet
