  2. What is delegation? • …the process of entrusting authority and responsibility to others so that work can be carried out.

  3. What is delegation not? • ….not giving up ultimate authority and responsibility for work.

  4. Why delegate? To free delagator’s time for other work

  5. To develop staff Increase experience and skills… Involve staff more in the life of the school… Raise awareness of different aspects of school life

  6. To cover for manager’s absence • Are you indispensable? • Aid to ‘ succession planning’ • Trust in your colleagues

  7. The next generation…. • Allows you to assess potential • Allows individuals to ‘raise their game’

  8. To increase motivation Increase confidence Open up ‘chances’ Devolves responsibility

  9. Your abilities…. • Some one else can fill the gaps… • But what if they’re better…? • Allows for upward delegation

  10. Your team…. • Lead from the front • It’s not all down to you • Involve all staff

  11. What will you delegate? • If it’s boring or menial…. • If you keep the ‘nice bits’ for yourself…. • Delegate results, not tasks • Do they know why they have this task?

  12. Choose the right person… • Who has the skills? • Who needs to develop the skills? • Don’t avoid those difficult staff members! • Is it achievable – and how?

  13. Practical issues • How much time do they have? • How much time do I have? • How much training time do we have? • Can they delegate?

  15. Supervision What is ‘supervising properly’? Guidance/resources/limits How much authority?

  16. Feedback It’s not only one way Keep the whole picture in view Where next?
