  8. What is Happening to the Rainforest? • The rainforest is disappearing! Statistics show 14% of the earths surface was once covered. Now a mere 6 % remain. Experts even predict that in forty years the rainforest will be completely gone! DEFORESTATION The permanent destruction of forests and woodlands

  9. Why is the Rainforest Being Destroyed? • The value of rainforest land is perceived as only the value of its timber by multi-national logging companies, and land owners.

  10. What are The Effects of Destroying the Rainforest? • We are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day. That equates to 50,000 species a year! • Possible cures for life-threatening diseases • Continuous extinction of Indigenous tribes and their accumulated knowledge of the medicinal value of rainforest species • Losing half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms
