Whine, whine, whine… • Read 1 Samuel 8:1-4 • What do you think God’s response is? • Read 1 Samuel 8:6-9 • Fine, but you asked for it! • Read 1 Samuel 8:10-18
A king will… • Take your sons and make them fight • Take your sons and make them work • Take your daughters and make them work • Take your fields for his ranking officials • Take your servants for his own use • Take your livestock for his own use • Tax you and make you slaves
And when you cry out because of your oppression, I will not answer!
We don’t care! • Read 1 Samuel 8:19-22 • They’re going to get what they want • A man named Saul is appointed King • He stood apart – was a head taller • He didn’t want it at first! – hid among the baggage
Things to Remember • Israel has never had a king before • Saul is a simple man, never having had authority before – he was from the least of the tribes! • What might this combination lead to?
The same old thing… • Saul does some good, but he disobeys God • Sound familiar? • He makes an offering before battle – this is a job only for the priests! • He allows an enemy to live and spares the best of everything for his own benefit, but God told him to destroy all of it! • Read 1 Samuel 15:10-11
A new king for the people… • Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13 • What is Samuel to consider when anointing the new king? • How does this compare to how Saul was chosen? • What is David doing while his brothers are looked at for consideration? • What do you see being hinted at here? Better yet, who do you see being hinted at here?
A skit… A bedtime story
David and Bathsheeba • David is king • He sees a woman bathing on another rooftop and he is filled with desire for her • He sends for her and they sleep together (breaking a commandment!) • She finds out she’s pregnant and tells David • David tries to get her husband, Uriah, to come home and sleep with her

David’s Successor • Solomon, Bathsheeba’s son, would be the next king • When Solomontakes the throne, God says He will give Solomon anything he wishes • What would you ask for if you had the chance? • He asks for wisdom • Solomon is known for building the Temple in Jerusalem and his palace • Like all of the others, Solomon eventually turns his back on God • God raises up enemies against Solomon
United no more… • Read 1 Kings 11:11-13 • Why does God say he will allow some of the Kingdom to remain? • Read 1 Kings 12 • Rehoboam – Solomon’s son and rightful ruler • Foolishly doesn’t take the advice of the elders • The 10 major tribes of Israel rebel against him and split from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin • Jereboam sought to make a place of worship and sacrifice for the people so they won’t rebel • Idol worship – breaking a commandment – which one?
