Chapter 16 Simple Machines. What is a machine?. A machine is a piece or many pieces put together to get work done. Work in Science refers to any push or pull, in order to move an object. Lever. A lever is a long bar with a support.

What is a machine? A machine is a piece or many pieces put together to get work done. Work in Science refers to any push or pull, in order to move an object.
Lever A lever is a long bar with a support. A lever contains a fulcrum, which is the support part of the lever machine.
Wheel and Axle A wheel and axle is a special type of lever that moves or turns an object. The axle is the rod that goes through the center of the wheel.
Pulley A pulley is a wheel with a rope, wire, or chain around it. A pulley changes the direction of a force.
Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a ramp. On an inclined plane you use less force to move an object and it goes a greater distance.
Wedge A wedge is a special kind of inclined plane. Wedges are used to split things apart, or move things.
Screw A screw is a type of inclined plane. Screws are used to fasten things, but can also be used to lift things.
