  3. How Congress in Organized • 112th Congress began on 1/3/11 – • 535 members (total) • Bicameral legislature – means two houses

  4. House Brett Guthrie • 435 members – based on population – 6 in KY • 25 years old – 7 years in U.S. • 2 year term – unlimited • Leader – Speaker of the House Extra Credit – Who is the current speaker? State? Party?

  5. Senate Mitch McConnell Rand Paul • 100 members – 2 per state • 30 years old – 9 years in the U.S. • 6 year term limit – unlimited • Leader Vice President – Joe Biden All Congress members must join a committee Salary - $165,000

  6. Powers of Congress • Expressed powers – listed in the Constitution (taxes, declare war, etc) • Implied powers – not listed but implied by the Constitution (raise army – implied to draft soldiers)

Representing the People • Constituents = people that make up state or district • Lawmaking primary purpose to make laws for their constituents – Example - Healthcare Reform – our senators and representative voted NO – does the majority of KY and Bullitt residents agree??????? Extra Credit opportunity – interview 5 people 1. Are you satisfied with the job Congress is currently doing? 2. Can you name our 3 representatives (2 Senators/1 House) in Congress?

  9. How a Bill Becomes Law • Bills are introduce in the House or Senate – debated voted on • Sent to the other house debated – voted on • Sent to the President – for signature – or veto Sounds simple but it’s not Let’s watch a cartoon about it

  10. Exit Slip • How many Senators does each state have? • Which plan called for equality in the Senate? • (page 141) – Which state has the most House members? How many? • How many states have only one House member? • How many does KY have?
