A Lean Cloud Monitoring Checklist • Ernest Mueller @ernestmueller
Lean Approach • Build - Minimum Viable Monitoring • Measure - All the Monitoring Points • Learn - About the App and the Monitoring • Repeat - Go Deeper Where It’s Needed
Monitoring MVP Areas • Service Performance and Uptime • Software Component Metrics • System Metrics • Application Metrics
Service Performance and Uptime Did you say “probe?” The end user view is the most important. MVP: Global synthetic probe of the end service– “Is it up?”
Software Component Metrics What you can page people on. MVP: Local probes, “nagios style.”Uptime via ports and processes, but dynamic. I’m pretty sure you said “probe.”
System Metrics Diagnose issues quickly. MVP: System metrics, “Zabbix style”– but you need usage and system size in context.
Application Metrics Business value and troubleshooting specifics. MVP: Log them and crunch the logs.
Advanced Add-Ons • RUM • App Container APM • Network APM • Warehousing, Analysis, Visualization • Clever Velocity Trix
