  3. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Ecfile1 outage report • Report presented to WNAG by Ray White • Ecfile1 had a hardware array error caused by a pinched and shorted out cable • Restore took hours to complete to the new media • New server is in production now

  5. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Server Changes • Moves to MFCF Machine room • Grandis (Nexus Domain Controller) • Asuka (Nexus DNS Server) • Grandis HW upgrades • Nexus servers moved into new computing facility • Science production servers moved to new facility

  6. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Nexus Cleanup • Initiated by Erick Engelke • Cleanup of machine and User accounts • Nexus machines added to DNS • Public Access OU for reporting on computers with multiple users ie. Lab Machines

  7. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • New/Upgraded Nexus Labs • ES General Access Nexus Lab (26 seats) • CS replacing three Nexus labs with Intel MAC’s for fall 2006

  10. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Online exams - blocking outside access • Arts is looking into online exams • Computer Science and Engineering use a hardware firewall to block all outside connectivity during exams • Considering using NIPFW and PSExec to block outside access during exams

  11. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Software Licensing • Continuing discussions regarding software licensing • SW packaging activity • Common Apps updated • Firefox 1.5 • Adobe Reader V7.07 • SPSS updated to version 14 • Group Policy Cleanup – all faculties • Cleanup of non-assigned GPO’s

  12. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Ongoing projects: • SAMBA3 upgrades and authentication issues • NIPFW - Firewall • Currently in use in Eng, Sci, Arts. • Will be testing in ES • Printer Naming Conventions • SAS Licensing • New Labs – Science • Nexus Lab relocations in ES

  13. Winter 2006 WNAG Activities • Future Considerations • Vista • hardware and software requirements and costs • Office 2007 • 64-bit OS • MS will drop 32-bit OS support by end of decade • 32 bit Application upgrades will be required
