  1. WNAG Report to UCIST April 2004 Presented by Bruce Campbell Engineering Computing

  2. WNAG Activities • Nexus – labs, active directory, etc • Mywaterloo – web based e-mail, file transfer etc. • Xas – common printer accounting system

  3. Nexus • Over 2400 computers • About 1000 OUs to group users, computers, etc • 49 registrar rooms with Nexus podium. Simplifies management, offers environment similar to what the students are using. Wide array of managed software available. • Undergraduate labs • Chemical Engineering faculty on Nexus • AHS moving faculty to Nexus

  4. Terminal Server • Increased use of terminal server, available through wireless and off campus • Access to Nexus applications • In Engineering, average about 100 users per day. • Plan to start advertising more

  5. Cerberus Project • Checks vital signs, detects evidence of breakin. • Deployed on many servers. • Engineering Computing and AHS investigating deployment on clients.

  6. Windows 2003 server • Many servers moved to Windows 2003 • Requires more ram, disk and faster CPU. • Has many improvements (and a few new bugs) • WNAG members are ironing out issues and sharing their experience.

  7. Engineering mmlab • 120 stations • Can be used for exams with firewall lockdown feature (prevents many possible avenues of cheating, while allowing access to the UWone website (or others as requested))

  8. Engineering File Server • Upgraded from Network Appliance file server to FreeBSD/samba last Fall. • Separate profile and home file servers. • We used “enterprise” quality hardware, Intel SC5200 chassis, SCSI, etc, and we have a spare server.

  9. Future Lab • Tim Farrell of IST is talking with the Office of Persons with Disabilities about converting their 8 station lab to Nexus. • Desire to have the lab similar to what students are using in the rest of campus.

  10. mywaterloo • Web based e-mail, file transfer, etc • Approximately 14,000 regular users • 125,000 sessions per week • Server upgrade in progress. Upgrading from dual AMD 2000+ to dual 3 GHz Xeon.

  11. Xas • eXtensible Accounting System • Used by Engineering, AHS, Science and the villages. • Steve Carr of IST has been instrumental in encouraging site wide deployment. • IST, ES, Arts, Math all have plans to convert to xas. • Some extensions to xas required to handle terminal services, grants, etc.
