    2. The KFC Mandate KFC a voluntary organization started in 1996 to foster responsible production and trade of cut-flowers and ornamentals in Kenya. Has a membership of 71 member farms representing 60-70% of the flowers exported from Kenya in terms of volume. The Council is charged with Industry Promotion, Lobbying, and Self-regulation.

    3. KFC Certification Scheme: KFC has a Certification Scheme with ISO/IEC Guide 65 Accreditation through SANAS, since October 2008. Implementation of two standards; KFC Silver and KFC Gold Standards. KFC Silver Benchmarked to Globalgap, Fair Flowers & Plants (FFP), and Tescos Nurture. KFC in the process of benchmarking and seeking mutual recognition with other major international standards e.g. Rainforest Alliance, ETI, MPS. Over and above market requirements, the standards address local legal requirements (about 23 government legislation).

Standards Requirements… The KFC Standards encompass:- CSR, HR & Labor management Safety & health at the workplace Good agricultural practices (GAP) Environmental Stewardship Quality management. Producers are audited once per year and if qualified awarded an annual certificated. An Independent Certification Committee drawing membership from industry stakeholders vets and awards the Certificates.

    5. Environment Stewardship… The KFC Standards strongly advocate for Environmental Stewardship, and are built on ISO14001:2004/ISO 14004:2004 environmental management systems (EMS) – requirements and guidelines. The KFC Environmental Chapter covers: Compliance with environmental legal requirements. Efficient use & conservation of Water, Energy, & other resources. Water harvesting, production methods (drip irrigation), hydroponic waste water recycling, constructed wetlands and resultant water re-use, authorised water abstraction, catchment areas conservation, respecting buffer zones along water bodies, maintaining records on water use. Energy management plan, including energy audits and implementation of report recommendations, encourage use of renewable energy (solar - production & domestic purposes, geothermal energy - one farm in Naivasha).

    6. …Environment Stewardship Integrative Waste management guided by the 4Rs. Management, effective & efficient use of Agrochemicals (N & P, Pesticides). Sustainable Soil Management towards building and maintaining healthy soils. Management of flora & fauna – native spp minimal disturbance where possible. Air and Sound pollution.

    7. …Environment Stewardship The KFC standards are revised regularly to meet local & international trends. We are looking at carbon and water foot-printing as future areas of interest. The council is in the working committee towards the development of ISO 14067. KFC has a database on resource use reporting for Certification on agrochemicals, water, & energy, which will be quite useful in developing company specific footprints.
