The Keystone XL Pipeline Clancy David
Introduction • The arguments regarding the Keystone Pipeline are something that will be a major issue in the near future. By finishing the Pipeline, the United States will not only become more self-sufficient, but will also create a large number of jobs in the process.
Point 1 • One of the main benefits that the United States would experience with the completion of the Keystone Pipeline would be that they would become less reliant on foreign nations to provide oil in order for us to maintain our daily lifestyles
Point 2 • The completion of the construction of the Keystone SL Pipeline will put the American people to work. This is very important for the United States at this time. With the approval of the construction of the pipeline we will be able to put between a cautious 5,000 jobs all the way up to a unprecedented 550,000 people to work in the process (George Hoberg, et al., 5).
Point 3 • Though many environmentalists believe that the completion of this pipeline would be detrimental to the environment, many of the current research arguments seem to say otherwise. Researchers have found that though the amount of barrels released per ton-mile when traveling through pipelines is greater than when oil travels on cargo ships and barges, the numbers have not been too drastically different in the past (Ramseur, 49).
Counterargument • It is worth noting that by raising the amount of oil we bring into the States, we are increasing the amount of emissions that come with that, which is also one of the main concerns of many environmentalists today. This oil comes from the tar sands of Canada and does, in fact, have a much higher carbon footprint than conventional oil.
Conclusion • By completing the construction of the Keystone XL, we would be able to become less dependent on foreign countries to supply us with oil; more jobs would be created which in turn would lower the unemployment rate; and environmentalists should realize that the pipeline is actually safer, than previously thought, for the environment. With the situation like it is politically with several countries in the Middle East right now, it should be of the utmost importance for the United States to do everything we can to be self sufficient.
