  1. Worldview and CultureThe Role of Religion and Other Worldviews in Cross-Cultural Communication 10 April 2013 by Sigrid Brevik Wangsness

  2. Gesteland’s Description of Business Behavior and Religion in the Arab World How does Gesteland define the Arab world? Why is this a useful description for potential cross-cultural communicators? There are obvious cultural links among the Gulf Arabs, but also divisive factors. Which? Gesteland emphasizes the diversity regarding the practice of Islam in the various Gulf states. What are his main points?

  3. Gesteland: How to Deal with Religious Differences in a Business Context What is the main difference between most Westerners’ practice of religion and that of most Gulf Arabs? What will increase Westerners’ chances of success in Muslim cultures? It is crucial that Westerners do not unintentionally insult Muslims by ascribing some of their traditional values to cultural backwardness. Is this easier said than done? Give examples of how certain attitudes and practices can create dilemmas for Westerners.

  4. Worldview Give a broad definition of worldview and discuss its relationship to culture. Why is it important to understand a culture’s worldview? In addition to religion, what are the two other main categories of worldviews? Generally, in what ways are the three main categories of worldviews different?

  5. Religion and Business Cultures Why is the study of worldviews relevant for intercultural communication? Explain how religion may have an impact on a business relationship. How has globalization influenced religion? What are the main elements of all religions? What do most religious traditions have in common? Why are rituals such a crucial aspect of all religions, and how do they affect various cultures?

  6. Religion and Cross-Cultural Communication Why do you think ethics and religion are linked? Based on “numbers, diffusion and relevance”, what are the six major worldviews that business people may encounter? The authors of this text emphasize that they have focused not on doctrine , but on “ways in which religion ‘gets acted out’”. Explain.
