Guidelines for your final essay • 3-5 pages • Due March 2nd • Your paper should include these three parts: • Part 1 • Summarize The Metamorphosis and explain what makes it a satire. • Consider these topics to include in your paper: • Define satire. • Include specific examples and quotations from The Metamorphosis to explain how it is a satire. • Think about the purpose of the novel: Why did Kafka write The Metamorphosis?

  7. Part 2 • Choose another short story to analyze. This story could be another short selection from Don Quixote (do not use the one we analyzed in class), or you could choose another short story that is a satire. • Consider these topics to include in your paper: • Summarize the short story you choose. • Use specific examples and quotations from the selection to explain how it is a satire. • Research the author of your short story: why did he write the short story? Like Kafka, was the author trying to comment on a larger issue?

  8. Part 3 • Compare and contrast The Metamorphosis and your short story selection. • Consider these topics: • Are the satires written for the same purpose, or for a different purposes? • What effect do the stories have on the reader? • These guidelines and a rubric are posted on the wiki

  9. Homework (due Thursday) • Read through the guidelines and the rubric that are posted on the wiki again. • Search for and print out the second short story that you want to use for your final essay • Bring your questions and your short story on Thursday for the essay workshop day.
