The Current Situation • Academic Senate is nearly unmanageable • COC can’t fill committees • Low morale and feelings of irrelevance • No attendance at meetings • Administration increasingly using Task Forces • Widespread belief that Campus service doesn’t count in Merits and Promotions • A small number of faculty are carrying most of the load

  3. Enhanced Need for Service • Enrollment and budget management plan will require substantial effort • Enhanced faculty role in UG and GS recruiting will be necessary for success • Campus will have to assume enhanced outreach role • Senate must get stronger and more respected

  4. Provost’s Proposal • Greater recognition of service in merit process • Achieved by release time for special assignments • Merit review will recognize and reward such service • Still under discussion

  5. Campus Options: Carrot or Stick? • Carrot: negotiated agreement between Deans, CAP, EVC that significant service will have more influence on file evaluation • Stick: break up service into on and off campus categories and require evidence of each for satisfactory performance • Incentive: raise prestige and enjoyment of Senate Service
