Objective: Students will add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (6-4).
Vocabulary: • Sum • Difference • LCD • Simplest form
Steps: • Read all directions!!!! • Write the problem. • Find the LCD for the bottom #’s (denominators). • Next, find the new numerators. • Add or subtract your numerators. • Keep same denominator. • Simplify
Notes: • LCD=LCM • NEVER leave a final answer as improper. Must change it to a mixed #. • Always reduce when possible!!!!!
Examples Find 2 _ 1 3 2 2 _ 1 = 4 _ 3 The LCD of ⅔ and ½ is 6 3 2 6 6 Rename ⅔ as 4/6 and ½ as 3/6.
Examples Find 2 _ 1 3 2 2 _ 1 = 4 _ 3 The LCD of ⅔ and ½ is 6 3 2 6 6 Rename ⅔ as 4/6 and ½ as 3/6. = 4-3 Subtract the numerators 6

Evaluate p - q if p=5 and q=3. 6 4 p-q = 5 _ 3 Replace p with 5/6 and q 6 4 with 3/4.
Evaluate p-q if p=5 and q=3. 6 4 p-q = 5 _ 3 Replace p with 5/6 and q with 6 4 3/4 = 10 _ 9 Rename 5/6 as 10/12 and 3/4 12 12 as 9/12
Evaluate p-q if p=5 and q=3. 6 4 p-q = 5 _ 3 Replace p with 5/6 and q with 6 4 3/4 = 10 _ 9 Rename 5/6 as 10/12 and 3/4 12 12 as 9/12 = 10-9 Subtract the numerators 12
