Honors in Action (HIA) Coming to you in the not so distance future . . . Presented by Deena Bisig, Advisor of Alpha Sigma Phi
The Hallmarks as we know it (NOW) • We write and complete three separate Hallmark award entries currently. • Scholarship • Leadership • Service • Consider your projects • Which Hallmarks do you incorporate? • One? Two? Three? All Four?
The Timeline • For the 2010 Convention in Florida – the Hallmarks will STAY THE SAME • For the 2011 Convention Seattle – the Hallmarks will CHANGE • What will you do? • Be PROACTIVE? • Be REACTIVE?
The Hallmarks IMPROVED • For the 2011 Hallmark Awards, we will be writing ONE essay… • WHY? HONORS IN ACTION! • The challenge is to incorporate as many Hallmarks as possible into each project your chapter completes.
But why change??? • The CORE foundation to the Honor Society is Academics. To encourage more focus on the “why” we serve and lead, the organization has decided to push the scholarship component to the forefront.
OUCH! That sounds hard . . . • It will be challenging BUT who doesn’t love a good challenge! • How to Prepare: • READ, READ, READ the Honors Study Topic Guide • Your chapter advisor should have received a bundle of them and you need to use them! • Discuss as a leadership team or with membership which of the area(s) your chapter wants to focus on.
DON’T DECIDE ON PROJECTS . . . YET!!!! • Determine a problem / area that your chapter wants to research. • RESEARCH, READ, EXPLORE! • From that research, determine how you can make a difference – what is the next step?
NOW DECIDE . . . • What project(s) you will commit to • Create the leadership development opportunities for your members • Go out and serve • Have FUN!!! • ALL 4 HALLMARKS ARE PRESENT!!!
BUT • They don’t HAVE to be. • That should be your goal, but it’s okay if there are only two Hallmarks hit upon.
SO this isn’t happening until later . . . • True. • But • Why • Not • Experiment • NOW???
FOR EXAMPLE . . . • The Greater Northwest Region has three projects already picked out. • OOPS!!!! • But let’s roll with it.
Keep America Beautiful / Trek Against Trash • (SCHOLARSHIP) Research your community. Where is the worst littering experienced? What is being damaged? What is the fine? Who is littering? Why? Is there a paradox present with this issue? What? • GUIDED by that research, figure out a project and/or event that helps fight this problem. • (LEADERSHIP) Who will chair? What do other members need to do? How will the team work together? • (SERVICE) Complete the project and/or event. • (FELLOWSHIP) Make it fun – race against each other, have prizes, have some recognition available for those who participate.
You can do this . . . Why try it this year? Why not? Get a head start! See how it goes so that you are prepared for the REAL THING in 2011. We want to see YOU, the GREATER NORTHWEST on the stage (DUH, we are in SEATTLE!!!!!)
