Background • SASD Media/Information Technology Plan • Goals and Action Steps for K-12 1-1 / BYOD program • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is phase II of SASD 1:1 and BYOD implementation plan • Phase I: 1-1 iPad initiative for grades K-8 • Phase II: Allowing 9-12 students to bring and use their own devices within school
What is BYOD • BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. • A “device” is defined as a privately owned: • Laptop • Netbook • Notebook • Tablet computing device • iPad, Galaxy, Kindle Fire • iDevices: iPod, iPad, iPhones • Smartphones • “device” also includes any similar product owned by SHS and provided for student use.

Why BYOD? • Our students are 21st Century Learners • They are digital natives and live in a world where information creation and consumption is constantly occurring. • Provide access to the tools and resources of a world-wide network. • Understanding when and how these tools are appropriately and effectively used are imperative in each student’s education. • Learning in an environment where technology is a part of us, not apart from us.

BYOD Benefits • Learning anytime, anywhere without schedule or access restrictions • Devices are commonly more up-to-date with newer features • Allows for immediate application in the classroom • Competitive pricing of tablets, smartphones, and laptop computers- BYOD a viable option for many families • Replicates a technology-rich environment already common in higher education and business • Flexibility- support different learners with different needs
The BYOD Educational Impact Can Be: • More engaged and motivated students • Students are held accountable for their learning, puts them in charge • Encourages continued learning outside of the classroom walls • Personalized, students tap into their individual learning preferences • Helps students identify skills that will make them life-long learners • Gives students a preview of how their future workplaces will operate
Shared Responsibility WITH GREAT ACCESS COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY • Student self-management of devices is a statement about the belief that form follows function. These devices need to be useful, flexible, and adaptable to the needs of students and teachers. No Technology Department structure or workflow can maintain that pace over an extended period of time. • By empowering our students self-manage these devices, and by placing the responsibility of doing so upon them (and their parents/guardians), parents/guardians), we allow our students and staff to focus on the most important tasks -- delivering and engaging in high quality teaching and learning opportunities.
Student Responsibilities • Read, sign and adhere to the SASD Acceptable Use Policy. • Access the internet through the SASD BYOD network only. • Access of the internet through data plans such as 3G/4G networks is prohibited. • SASD is not responsible for any data or app charges that a student may incur from a service provider.
Student Responsibilities Cont. • Use of the SASD BYOD network is for instructional and school related purposes only. • Understanding device functionality and developing an appropriate “work flow” when using it • Students may not use any device or service for non-educational purposes during school hours • Devices may only be used in approved areas of the school. Students may not use devices in parts of the school designated as no technology zones.
Student Responsibilities Cont. • The student is responsible for the condition of any personal device used for BYOD including: • Updates, antivirus software and any repairs. • Fully charged and ready to use • Reporting problems and returning (school owned devices) • The student is fully responsible, at all times, for personal devices brought to school. • SHS is not liable for any loss, damage, or theft of personally owned devices.
Parent Responsibilities • Read, review and sign the SASD Acceptable Use Policy. • Have clear understanding of: • What devices will be supported within the school environment • How and when devices are allowed in school environment • Responsibilities for payment of fees and/or damages • Setting clear and consistent expectations for use related to school activities outside the building • Monitoring the use of the device at home • Be sure your child’s device is in proper working order and is fully charged daily. • Communicating with school and staff if questions, concerns arise related to device use
District Responsibilities • Provide a safe “sandbox” where students can access resources maintaining compliance with federal laws • Providing infrastructure to support BYOD • Managing student use of devices to offer accountability and efficiency • Returning damaged school owned devices to service quickly with minimal loss of instruction time • Sustaining the program

What BYOD at SHS Will Look Like • Combination of: • School devices: Computer labs, netbooks and Google Chrome books • Personal devices • Recommendations on what to purchase and bring for parents and students • Possible lease program/Payment plan • Reduced cost or free use of school devices based on need.
Infrastructure • Network • Robust wired network • Wireless coverage of building • Wireless density • Virtual Desktop Environment • Applications/Software that are device independent • Google Docs for example. • Trained staff
Which Mobile Devices are Supported? • BYOD Device Guidelines • SHS Specification sheet is available on District website • Devices meeting Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) guidelines • MOST Internet enabled devices that can connect to the district’s wireless network • Devices need to support the 802.11 a/g/n wireless standard • These devices may include, but are not limited to: • Laptops/Netbooks (Macintosh and Windows based) • Apple mobile devices: iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone • Android based tablets and smartphones • Other tablet computing devices • Some e-readers
What Does SHS Recommend? • Any device is better then none. • For maximum effectiveness SHS recommends: • Laptops/Netbooks (windows or mac) • Google Chromebook • Tablets (Apple and Android based) • Smart Phones • Reasoning: • Larger screen size • Keyboard • Storage
How will my student access the internet? • Students will access the internet through the SASD BYOD wireless network. • This network will provide filtered internet access as well as access to other District systems and resources. • Any and all access may be monitored for the purposes of network security and student safety.
What if my child doesn’t have a device to bring to school? • District will provide access through a combination classroom computers and a limited number of mobile devices. • School will provide or lease devices to students at reduced rate for those in need. • Reduced cost or free use of school devices based on need. • Will also provide options for check out depending on situation and need. • Students may collaborate with other students as appropriate.
