  2. What is BYOD? • Bring Your Own Device – for educational purposes • Many schools doing this now • Financial reasons • Student preference • At Donegal – DJH will be FIRST!

  3. Why would my child want to? • Everything in one place • Used to his/her own device • Don’t have to worry about school computer: • Logging on • Quality • Social

  4. What does the school get from it? • Take advantage of something students already have with them • Read their own books on Kindle/Nook • Easy to reach for a mobile device to answer a question • Develop students’ technology skills • Develop students’ appreciation of mobile device as a tool for lifelong learning

  5. What are the risks? • Loss or theft • Record serial # • Theft protection • Damage • Proper case • While we will help students keep devices safe, and attempt to recover lost items, the responsibility is on the student

  6. What other issues do I need to be aware of? • No access to printers, network folders • Saving must be done on device, cloud, Moodle • STUDENTS responsible • Using the device • Troubleshooting

  7. What are the rules? • MAY be used in classrooms ONLY with teacher permission • Photos, recording included • Teachers may require phones be in view: on desk, chalk tray, in basket

  12. How can parents help? • Help locate information for registering • Maintain records, serial number • Help students find registration information • Help students install, manage appropriate apps • Talk about responsible use of technology

  13. How can parents help? • Buying a new device? • Wireless capability • Virus protection (where applicable) • Minimum of 4 hours battery life • Recent browser for access to GoogleApps, Moodle, library catalog, etc.

  14. How can parents help? • Buying a new device? • Camera for still and video • Microphone • Ability to play Flash (required for some videos and animations)

  15. BYOD is OPTIONAL! • For students • For teachers
