About the Author…. • Byron was born on January 22, 1788 in London, England. • He was best known for the immense influence that he made on European poetry, music, novel, opera, and painting. • Many of his famous writings includes; “ Heaven and Earth”, “ The Corsair”, “ Sonnet to Chillon”, “ Prometheus” and many other poems. About “ Prometheus”…. • “ Prometheus”, is consider to be more of a mythology rather than a poem, this mythology is about Prometheus, a mythological hero. • The mythology points out the severe punishment that Prometheus received from the god Zeus because of his theft. • He stole the fire from the divinities and gave it to the people, this was consider a severe crime, Prometheus was in favor of the humans. • Zeus sentenced Prometheus to eternal torment by bounding him to a rock, where each day an eagle was sent by Zeus to feed on his liver, the purpose of this was to have it grow back to be eaten the next day. • Then Hercules killed the eagle and freed Prometheus.

Characters Setting • Prometheus: is a Titan cultural hero, the main character of this mythology • Zeus: is the king of the Olympian gods. • Hercules • The narrator • The setting of this mythology is the Heavens and Earth, Zeus kingdom will also be part of the setting. • However, the setting changes when Zeus send Prometheus to Earth Caucasus Mountains, where he receives his punishment.

MAJOR actions… • One of the major actions that happens in this mythology is when Prometheus commits the crime of stealing, this is supported by the following quote from the poem: ( In Byron poem, he writes “ Thy Godlike was to be kind to render with thy precepts less the sum of human wretchedness”. • Another major action is the cruel punishment that Prometheus receives, the following quote from the poem explains it, “ The rock, the vulture and the chain, all that the proud can feel of pain, the agony they do not show”. • When Hercules killed the eagle and freed Prometheus.

Literary Terms… • There is two literary terms that apply to this poem, which are tone and symbol. • The tone of this poem is described as mythological, depressed, and sad, as the narrator describes Prometheus torture, his agony is noticeable. • The rock, the vulture, and the chain symbolize the tools that Zeus use for Prometheus punishment.

  7. Other Connections… • Prometheus relates to “ Sonnet to Chillon” in many ways. This two writings are connected to each other because in both selections, the main characters are being cruelly punished by the people that have the most power. • The freedom of both characters is being controlled by the ones that have the authority. • Most importantly, in both poems Lord Byron's interpretation of both poems is highly reflective of his involvement and support of Romanticism.
