  1. Digestive, Excretory and Endocrine Body Systems BY: BRIANNA SHIELDS

  2. DO NOW • Complete the 10 multiple choice questions on the Do Now handout

  3. GOAL • To be able to describe the digestive, excretory and endocrine systems and how their functioning helps the body to maintain homeostasis

  4. REVIEW- Without using notes! • Describe how and what the circulatory system transports to and from the cells of the body • The heart pumps our blood which transports oxygen and nutrients into the body cells and carbon dioxide and wastes out of the body cells

  5. REVIEW- Without using notes! • What are the two main structures within the circulatory system? What does each do? • Heart and blood vessels: Heart pumps the blood, blood vessels carry the blood

  6. REVIEW- Without using notes! • Name the various blood vessels • Arteries, veins and capillaries

  7. REVIEW- Without using notes! • Differentiate between arteries, veins and capillaries • Arteries transport blood with O2 in it away from the heart • Veins transport blood to the heart with CO2 in it • Capillaries are thin and found near major organs so gases can pass through them

  8. REVIEW- Without using notes! • Describe the pathway that oxygen follows when someone inhales (hint: there are 5-6 major steps) • Mouth/nose ---> Trachea --> Bronchial Tubes --> Bronchi (branches) --> Air sacs/alveoli --> surrounded by capillaries

  9. REVIEW- Without using notes! • How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work together? • Respiratory brings oxygen into the body and circulatory system transports it to cells, where it picks up CO2 and brings it to lungs where respiratory system gets rid of it

  10. REVIEW- Without using notes! • What are the 3 main parts of the nervous system? • Brain, spinal cord, nerves

  11. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM VIDEO • Describe the path that food takes as it passes through the body

  12. Digestive System: Label your diagram

  13. GOAL Breaking food down into nutrients that cells can use Peristalsis- involuntary squeezing of food through the digestive tract Digestive System

  14. Pathway of Digestion 1. MOUTH- Digestion begins, starches broken down (saliva and teeth) 2. ESOPHAGUS Food passes through (peristalsis)

  15. Pathway of Digestion STOMACH Chemical & Mechanical digestion (proteins broken down) SMALL INTESTINE Most digestion happens, digestion is completed- find villi for absorbing nutrients

  16. Pathway of Digestion LARGE INTESTINE Stores & eliminates undigested food ANUS Solid waste passed out

  17. Excretory System Video • What does the excretory system do? What organs are involved?

  18. Excretory System: Label your Diagram Skin Lungs Kidneys

  19. GOAL Ridding the body of cellular and solid waste Types of waste Water Heat CO2 Salt Urine Excretory System

  20. Organs of Excretion LUNGS- excretes CO2, water, heat SKIN- excretes water, salt, heat KIDNEYS- excretes water, salt, urine Excretory System

  21. Organ of elimination ANUS/LARGE INTESTINE- gets rid of feces (s0lid waste) Excretory System

  22. Endocrine System Video • What does the endocrine system do? • What types of glands does your body have that are actually NOT part of the endocrine system?

  23. Endocrine System: Label your diagram

  24. GOAL Glands make and release chemical regulators into the blood: hormones to respond to changes inside & outside the body Endocrine System

  25. What do hormones do? 1. Help chemical reactions in body 2. Affect maturity & reproduction 3. Help physical & mental development Endocrine System

  26. GLANDS Pituitary- controls all other glands Thyroid- regulates metabolism Thymus- fights infection Adrenals- fights body stress Islets of Langerhans- Produces insulin to control blood sugar levels Gonads/Testes- makes sex cells Endocrine System

  27. Reviewing what we’ve learned • What is the job of the digestive system? • What is the job of the excretory system? • What is the job of the endocrine system?

  28. Reviewing what we’ve learned • Name at least 2 parts of the digestive system • Name all 3 excretory organs and the organ of elimination involved with the excretory system • What are the major organs of the endocrine system?

  29. WEBSITES • Virtual Body: Digestive tract animations • My Body for Kids: Digestive system animated diagram • My Body for Kids- Kidney/Urinary tract animated diagram • Yucky Stuff • Interactive body system review • Innerbody.com
