Interview • Investigate/research/interview • Review previously submitted grant applications • Meet with at least one board member • Ask and answer questions • Provide writing samples • Provide a project outline
Pre-Assessment • Assess the project • Determine the organization’s ability to comply • Review the last 3-5 years of audits • Review organizational or program budget
The Written Contract • You should always have a written contract or letter of agreement • The contract should outline fees and other expenses, a payment schedule, list scope of work to be performed, project start and end date, at least two organizational contacts, and a provision to extend or cancel the contract
Grant Application • Determine if you are qualified to write the grant • Review the grant application and identify everything you will need in order to complete the grant • Review the application with your client
When to Fire a Client • Unreasonable and unfair expectations • Too demanding • Organization’s practices are contrary to their public reputation
How to Fire a Client • Seek resolution first • If “firing” the client is inevitable do so very carefully
