  2. Course description • In this course, students are able to develop deeper understanding of how the English language system works. Students will explain, analyse, talk, and present the the grammar of English language by elaborating on how grammar and the English language system works. Students will compare and synthesis the structure and use of the English language. Through activities that focus on accuracy more than fluency, students are able to speak, write and read better. They are also able to correct common errors as well as ambiguities.

  3. Course objectives • At the end of the course students should be able to: • Understand and be aware of their own attitude about language, • Analyse the structure of English grammar, • Understand and use grammar correctly in written and oral communication.

  4. definition • The word “noun” derives from the Latin nomen meaning NAME • Noun is a word which refers to people, things, ideas, feelings or qualities

  5. Types of nouns 1. Proper nouns • Also called proper names • Are the names of unique entities. • Ex: Shila, Edward, Malaysia, Japan, Monday, October, etc. • Proper nouns are capitalised in English

  6. 2. Common nouns • Boy, planet, country are coomon nouns. • Refers to a person, place, things, in a general sense. • Only capitalysed when you begin a sentence.

  7. 3. Abstact nouns/ideas • A noun that is abstract is an aspect, concept, idea, experience, stateof being, trait, quality, feeling, or other entity that cannot be experienced with the fives senses. • Send them my love. [in this sentence, the word love function as an abstact noun because it is a thing that exist beyond five senses. • Ex: peace, honesty, kindness…..

  8. Nouns group • Can be subject, object or complement of a verb, or a object of preposition. • Can be their own, but often include other words such as deyerminers, numbers, and adjectives. • It also can be pronouns. • Singular noun groups take singular verbs and plural noun groups take plural verbs.

  9. Singular noun ex: boy, tree, book • Plural noun a) regular- ends in S ex: shirt- shirts girl- girls b) irregular- change in vowel ex: woman- women

  10. GENDER NOUNS Masculine gender all words representing male ex: boy, king, prince Feminine gender all words representing female ex: girl, princess, queen

  11. Neuter gender Inanimate objects ex: book, chair, pen Common gender males or females ex: cousin, child, friend
