Lambeth LINk- Equality, integration and empowerment • Local residents and voluntary and community organisations coming together to give their time • to engage with health and social care • In the last month.. • Citizen and voluntary organisations involvement in roundtable discussions to discuss prioritisation and fairness in setting budgets • LINk members active in several Equality Impact Assessment challenge sessions • 12 new citizens trained to “enter and view” premises

Benefits of Engagement • NICE (2008) found that community engagement can improve the following all • of which can mitigate inequalities: • health literacy • health outcomes • sense of belonging to a community (social capital) • empowerment • sense of wellbeing • Marmot • Health benefits for those actively involved include improvements in physical • and mental health, health related behaviour and quality of life (Piachaud) • Ideally intervention needs to be local activity in a national context

  4. Empowerment – Staying Positive Workshops 14young people with Type 1 diabetes taught self care skills by other young people with diabetes trained as facilitators.

New HWBB Principles for Citizen Involvement • Working together for change through • co-production • Recognising people as assets and using the skills and strengths they have to design and run services • Building on people's capabilities • Promoting mutuality and reciprocity • Developing peer support networks • Facilitating rather than delivering • Breaking down barriers between professionals and users
