Question Stems • Ask about viewpoint, perspectives. • Examine title & tone and connect with current issues. • As questions that explore your interpretation of the reading. • “So what…..” connect critique • “ what does it matter that….” analyze prove • “How does this affect that….” compare predict
Preparation • Must have a text for students to read • Students annotate & mark text (done prior to Socratic Seminar • Students create 2-3 questions based on the article (higher level)
Rules for students to follow • 1 person speaks at a time • NO INTERRUPTING • It’s a discussion not a debate! • Student’s comments should reference the text • Students should provide evidence from text when making a point • Students should build on what others say • Be respectful of others’ comments • Teacher is a mediator, not a participant
Roles • Inner circle- speaking/asking questions • Outer circle- taking cornell notes on major points made by participants in inner circle • VARIATIONS • Time to discuss with wingmen • Inner/outer switch
Cornell Notes Review • Setup T format • Essential Question: Can a teacher manage & produce a quality product in 47 minutes? • Notes on right during discussion • Chunk notes after discussion • Create questions after chunking on left • Write a summary • Turn in Notes as Exit Slip
