Throat Singing Today • Competitions are still held annually in the region of Tuva, a past member of the Soviet Union located just above Mongolia. • Most competitors are local men, but the rules for entries has become more open women and outsiders. • Throat singing is performed outside Tuva as well.

  3. Throat Singers of Today • Female Throat Singers • Many all-female throat singing groups are springing up. • Female throat singers are now allowed in traditional throat singing competitions.

  4. Throat Singers of Today • Paul Pena • Learned how to throat sing by ear because he is blind. • Infuses throat singing with jazz • Paul was invited to compete in a traditional competition in Tuva; he used his untraditional method of singing and the audience loved it.
