  2. History of EPMAN • EPMAN was initiated in 2008 (first meeting on the 12th November, in Milan) • EPMAN succeeds the Expert Group on Ammonia Abatement activities • EPMAN was created under the Task Force on Reactive Nitrogen (TFRN) to support the Gothenburg protocol revision (Annex IX) • 5 previous EPMAN meetings in conjunction with TFRN ( first meeting Milan Nov 2008, last St Petersburg, March 2012)

  3. Main assignments and activitiesof the EPMAN • To provide technical support for revision of the Annex IX of the Gothenburg Protocol • To updatethe Guidance Document on abating emissions of ammonia in support of Annex IX • To updatethe UNECE Framework Code for Good Agricultural Practice for Reducing Ammonia • To provide linkage between Annex 9 and methodologies on the emission inventories

  4. What have been already done? • Updating of the Guidance Document on abating emissions of ammonia. • Emphasis on nitrogen management- taking account of the whole nitrogen cycle (i.e. avoiding unintended consequences). • New chapters on livestock feeding strategies and whole farm N management • Addition of costs of abatement measures per kg of ammonia saved; • Revised chapters on abatement in housing, slurry storages and slurry application • Supporting documents on land spreading (on TFRN site) and manuscript published (Webb et al.) and new book on costs (edited by Stefan Ries et al.) • Involvement of EECCA countries

  5. What needs to be done ? • To updatethe UNECE Framework Code for Good Agricultural Practice for reducing ammonia • update current code that addresses unrevised Annex 9 • develop an appendix or supporting document based on the revised Guidance Document. • It is hope that the combined documents material may advance the cause of abatement by providing an clear and accessible source • Informal meeting Sept 27, 2012 at Seminaris planned course of action.

  6. Also…. • To collaborate on the methodologies for emission inventories
