Types of Nonfiction • Diary: the day-by-day record a person keeps of his or her own activities and thoughts. It is meant for the writer alone. • Autobiography: the story of a person’s own life. Usually, the writer wants to share what he or she learned from the events.
Types of Nonfiction • Biography: the story of another person’s life. The writer bases the report on records of what the person did and said. • Personal Recollection: like an autobiography, is written about a person’s own life. However, it concentrates on one event.
Characters, Plot, and Setting • The characters, plot, and setting of nonfiction are real. • The main character in an autobiography or biography is called the subject.

Tone • Tone is the attitude a writer has toward his or her subject matter, a particular character, or an audience.
